Course Description:

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic inflammatory lung disease that causes obstructed airflow from the lungs. Long-term exposure to irritants such as industrial dust, gases, or other particulate matter - most often tobacco smoke, can cause breathing difficulty, cough, mucus (sputum) production and wheezing. People diagnosed with COPD are at an increased risk of developing heart disease, lung cancer and a variety of other conditions.

In this course, we will examine how to recognize COPD in undiagnosed patients, understand the latest treatments available, consider the importance of behavioral treatments for COPD, and learn about the various comorbidities that are exacerbated or developed as a result of COPD.

Presenter:

Clint Shedd is a certified FNP and is a clinical associate professor at Emory University Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing.  He holds a DNP, MN, and BSN from Georgia Regents University and a BFA from the University of Georgia.

Prior to his faculty position, Dr. Shedd worked in pulmonary practice, and he currently works in allergy/immunology care as a nurse practitioner. Additionally, Dr. Shedd has published in the areas of VTE prophylaxis, anaphylaxis, COPD management, and in the care of acute asthma exacerbations.
