Course Description:

In this course, we'll provide a broad framework for evaluating skin damage from external causes from identifying the characteristics, pathology, and management options for partial-thickness wounds to considering the characteristics, prevention, and management of Shear, Friction, and Pressure. We will also identify the characteristics, pathology, and management options for full-thickness wounds due to pressure and shear and explain the relationships among intensity of pressure, duration of pressure, and pressure gradients in terms of pressure injury development. Finally, in this course, we will describe the pathologic response to prolonged or severe tissue ischemia, and associated clinical indicators, including evidence of deep tissue injury.

This course has been created by Emory’s Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nursing Education Center (WOCNEC). Accredited since 1976, Emory WOCNEC provides nursing education related to acute and chronic wounds, fecal and urinary diversions, and fecal and urinary incontinence.

Target Audience: All RN's interested in understanding more about skin and tissue loss by external factors.
