Course Description:
The Fundamentals of the Forensic Medical Exam course focuses on the medical-legal examination of persons experiencing violence. While we will briefly discuss care of victims and perpetrators, psychosocial and physical needs, ethics, sexual assault, elder abuse, child maltreatment, and intimate partner violence, the primary focus of this course is the analysis of wounds/patterns of injury, evidence collection, preservation, and analysis.

This course was created by Trisha Sheridan DNP, WHNP-BC, SANE-A, SANE-P. Dr. Sheridan has over 15 years of experience in healthcare with almost 10 years as a board certified Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner. She is currently board certified as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner for Adults, Adolescents and Pediatrics through the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) and has worked in clinical settings evaluating victims of violence including collecting evidence, documenting injuries, and providing medical care to since 2010. Dr. Sheridan is an assistant professor at Emory University’s Nell Hodgson School of Nursing where she is the Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner Program coordinator. She recently served as a Director at Large on the Board of Directors for the IAFN and her work there includes coordinating the task force on the National Elder Abuse Curriculum for Nurses, as well as updating the national curriculum for the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner training. Prior to her current position, Dr. Sheridan was a Clinical Assistant Professor at Texas A&M University and Forensic Nurse Examiner Program Coordinator at Baylor Scott & Hospital in College Station, TX

Emory Nursing Professional Development Center (ENPDC) is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.  Attendees to this CNE activity will be awarded 2.5 contact hours by ENPDC.
