Course Description:

In 2018, a staggering 68,557 people died from a drug overdose. According to data from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, opioid overdoses are the top 3 causes of drug overdoses. The Opioid Epidemic course reviews the scope of the crisis, how we got here, the three-pronged approach to treating substance use disorders, and the maintenance medications used to treat Opioid Use Disorder. This course also explains what Harm Reduction is and the role health providers can play in promoting harm reduction.

This course was created by Annie Mascorro RN, PHN, CARN. Annie is a Certified Addictions RN with 9 years of experience working in addiction medicine. She currently works as the Nurse Case Manager for Substance Use Disorders at Chapa-De Indian Health, a primary care clinic in Northern California serving Native Americans and low-income patients. She helped to establish and now runs the Medication Assisted Treatment program for patients with Opioid Use Disorder at Chapa-De.  In addition to her work with patients, she advocates for addiction treatment in the community and the elimination of stigma, presenting to community stakeholders, mentoring students, and working with clinics starting MAT programs.
